Jackson Hole has some of the best skiing in the US if not the world. But one of the key factors that make winters there so special is all the untouched natural environment of the Grand Tetons and greater Yellowstone area. Few destinations can offer the wide-open wilderness found in the valley while still having access to world-class ski resorts, hotels, and restaurants. Whether you’re visiting to ski or just explore, Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris offer unforgettable winter adventures for all travelers.
I did a half-day winter wildlife safari with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris through the Four Seasons last year during my trip to Jackson. It is a must-do experience for travelers seeking a deeper connection to the area. Spending a day on a safari introduces visitors to the region’s vibrant ecosystem and its remarkable wildlife. It’s a chance to explore the land that shapes the Jackson Hole experience, both on and off the slopes.
Add a wildlife safari to your ski trip

Skiing dominates winter in Jackson Hole, but don’t overlook the region’s diverse wildlife. A guided safari complements the adrenaline of skiing by providing a peaceful way to experience Jackson Hole. Visitors can take in the beauty of the Grand Tetons and the greater Yellowstone region through an expert led tour.
Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris offers half-day and full-day winter tours, making it easy to fit a safari into your itinerary. In addition to wildlife scouting, tours stop at various scenic overlooks to give guests the chance to experience some of the most picturesque areas of Jackson Hole.
The company provides comfortable vehicles equipped for winter conditions, ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey.
Dress warmly, as you’ll spend some time outside the vehicle to observe wildlife and take photos. Binoculars and spotting scopes are provided, allowing you to see animals up close.
Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris expert guides

I had an amazing guide last year on the half day wildlife safari I did with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris through the Four Seasons. All tours are led by a naturalist guide, all JHWS guides are hand-picked for their expertise and passion. All guides must have a thorough understanding of the history, ecology, geology, geography, and wildlife for both Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. Many guides are trained naturalists or biologists who understand the region’s unique ecosystem. Their expertise transforms the safari into more than just a sightseeing tour.
Guides explain how Jackson Hole’s wildlife has adapted to survive harsh winters. They share fascinating details about animal behavior, migration patterns, and the role of conservation efforts. We did our tour with Lee and cannot say enough nice things about him! He was able to tailor the tour to our specific interests and taught us a lot about the history of the region. The dedication and passion of the JHWS guides is contagious and you will definitely leave with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the ecosystems we enjoy.
Wildlife you might see
Winter creates a stunning stage for spotting wildlife against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains. Guests could see elk, moose, bighorn sheep, coyotes, wolves, bison and more!
Elk herds dominate the valley, especially near the National Elk Refuge, where thousands gather each winter. Watching these majestic animals graze and move was an amazing experience. Moose sightings are common, we got lucky right at the start of our tour and saw three enjoying breakfast.
Later on, we observed a large group of bighorn sheep relaxing on the rocks. As we stood watching and taking photos 3 coyotes appeared on the rocks, stalking the bighorn sheep looking for easy prey. But the bighorn sheep ran them off! It was really special getting to watch nature at work and our guide was right there to explain what we were observing and answer questions. He explained various characteristics of coyotes vs wolves (pro-tip if you’re questioning whether it is a coyote or a wolf, it’s a coyote. If you see a wolf there will be no doubt in your mind!)
For those lucky enough, a winter safari might include a glimpse of bison or wolves. There is no guarantee about what animals you will see but the guide’s expertise and familiarity with the area gives you the best chance to see as much as possible!
Why it’s worth it

Skiing and snowboarding can have negative impacts on the environment, from development, energy use, increased tourism traffic etc. The sports that get so many outside, enjoying the mountains can also be harmful to the mountains. Many resorts are working hard to reduce environmental impact and move towards sustainability. In 2019 Jackson Hole Mountain Resort transitioned to 100% Green Power for all electricity needs. Taking care of the environment is essential to assuring the future of skiing and snowboarding.
As a skier I spend so much of my winter outside enjoying the mountain and I have always been passionate about protecting the environment. But this experience let me see first-hand what it is we are fighting to protect. It’s not just about combating climate change to assure there is snow season after season. While we’re on the mountains we have to remember we are enjoying someone else’s home and we have a responsibility to protect that home. Not just for future generations of skiers and riders, but for the animals that share their home with us.
This truly was a once in a lifetime experience and something that will stick with me for a long time. I cannot recommend taking at least a half day off from skiing to do a wildlife safari. Skiing in the Tetons offers thrill and exhilaration, but a wildlife safari provides perspective and connection. Don’t leave Jackson Hole without venturing beyond the ski slopes.
